[The vaginal muscles] attach the vagina to the sternite of the 7th abdominal segment, and probably function chiefly by assisting the vagina to expel eggs during oviposition. It is attached very closely by its ventral surface to a somewhat V-shaped sclerite [= furcula] (text-fig. 5, V.S.), which serves to fix the vagina firmly into position against the arms of the ovipositor sheath [= 2nd valvula].
